A Family Tradition
Role: Designer & Developer
Redesigned: Summer 2014
For more than 60 years, Hensler Nursery has delighted its customers by growing some of the best Christmas trees you’ll ever see. I might be a little biased, though. My grandfather started the tree farm in 1953 using the practical know-how of a Forestry degree from Michigan State, rich Indiana soil and a little magic. Over the years, the nursery steadily grew into a high-volume producer for the wholesale Christmas tree market, shipping trees to retail locations across the country.
When my dad took over 30 years ago, he transformed the tree lot experience into a month-long festival known as Christmas Fest. You’ll find Belgian horses transporting wagon-loads of people across the 300 acre farm to cut their own Christmas trees. You’ll see parents taking kids to visit Santa and Mrs. Claus. You’ll notice people stopping for lunch at the barn, shopping for holiday greenery and enjoying the twinkling ambiance of the lights trimming the buildings and trees.
Hensler Nursery is so much more than a tree farm. It’s Norman Rockwell meets Mayberry. It’s the business of nostalgia.
The new website needed to capture the feeling of being at the farm while also featuring events, providing directions, listing product information and providing a mechanism for newsletter sign-up.
The visual design features loads of color and texture that echo the nostalgic vibe of Hensler Nursery. Under the hood, WordPress powers this website which was coded to be mobile-friendly by utilizing responsive design strategy. MailChimp is used to manage the newsletter subscriber list, and the sign-up form is featured on every page.
